Dr. Elizabeth Crosse facilitated reframing and deeper understanding for me about Learning and Development, and the nuances of each:

Learning = Enhancing Capability

Development = Enhancing Capacity

As a Coach, this has shifted my perspective to focus on Development, which Elizabeth usefully explained is like a systems upgrade for tech devices.

During an in-person event hosted by the UK ICF for Local Group Leaders, we reflected on our current developmental needs through the lens of our coaching purpose and personal requirements (Business, Learning and Practical needs), in parallel with what it means to craft coaching, embody the beingness of coaching, and coaching as an art. With great heart, I recommend finding out more from Elizabeth's research and how to work though her Developmental Mindset Inventory (DMI), for a dynamic personal and professional development programme designed to emerge as we evolve.

Key takeaways to share with my network:

  • We can learn without developing

  • It is wise to allow time for learning to settle (knowledge, skills and competencies), and pay attention to what we can integrate

  • Developing oneself - working on ourselves - e.g., our shadow self, expands our potential to be a Coach

  • With a systemic lens, we develop with depth when we help others develop

This informs my role at UK ICF (International Coaching Federation) as Board Director for Professional Development. *To engage with the reflective dialogue on this, please click: LinkedIn Post.
